HHDC’s After School Matters Development Program offers six-week summer internships for 12 to 15 youths between the ages of 16 and 21. The interns work as administrative assistants in property management offices or as maintenance staff and participate in community outreach efforts such as maintaining neighborhood gardens or feeding homeless people at local churches. In addition to learning the business of real estate development and property management, the interns receive training in the college application process, test taking, and employment.

"I first learned about the After School Matters summer internship program in April 2005. I applied and was hired to work at Hispanic Housing’s Workforce Development office in Humboldt Park. It was exciting. view moreI already had worked in that community as a volunteer for Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation and was happy to be back.
After completing the internship program, I kept in contact with the Workforce Development team and was rehired the following summer. The Workforce Team liked the way that I worked, and in October 2006 I was offered the position of administrative assistant at their office.
Today, I’m working and in my sophomore year at Northeastern Illinois University. I’m also teaching computer skills and helping with Job Search Seminar workshops. I’ve come far in a short time."
